“O you who believe, siyaam-fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you that you might increase awareness.” 2:183
Among other things, the month of Ramadan is a time to increase awareness.
One interpretation of the word تَتَّقُونَ /tattaqūnaa is awareness, and one meaning of awareness is the state or ability to perceive, to feel, or to be conscious of events, objects or sensory patterns. It also refers to public or common knowledge or understanding about a social, scientific, or political issue.
I think Ramadan is a great opportunity to re-engage and promote the issues found in the Quran (2:185), with special attention given to (world) hunger and thirst (2:187), and healthy sex/love lives (2:187) best obtained by abstaining while seeking a mate, or by reigniting the spark with our spouses (2:187).
“Encouraged for you on the night of the fast is the approach to your wives. They are your garments and you are their garments. G-d knows what you used to do secretly among yourselves, but He turned to you and forgave you. So now associate with them, and seek what G-d has ordained for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn appears to you distinct from its black thread. Then complete your fast until the night appears. But do not be intimate with your wives while you are in retreat in the masjid. Those are limits set by G-d, do not come near it. G-d makes clear His signs to humanity, that they may become realized.” 2:187
