Ramadan (Reading Quran), Surah 73

20120815-130751.jpg
In case you feel a little uncomfortable about not “finishing” (can we ever really finish?) the Quran this Ramadan, consider this…

God does not acknowledge that Muhammad the Prophet read/recited the entire Quran during Ramadan but God does acknowledge that Muhammad the Prophet read the Quran nightly (73:20). And God does not encourage (or discourage) us to read the entire Quran during Ramadan but He does encourage us to read the Quran nightly (73:2-6).

Also, God did not separate the Quran into 30 parts to be read in 30 days during Ramadan or any other month. The Quran can be separated into any number of parts (3, 13, 300, 3000…). 30 is usually a good number because it can help us develop a nightly reading plan each month of the year (including Ramadan).

Finally, should our religious emphasis not be placed where God places it? And should we not focus primarily on the ways of Muhammad the Prophet which God focuses on and acknowledges? I think so.

Surah 73
2. Arise at night, but not all night,
3. Half of it, or a little less,
4. Or a little more, and vocalize the Quran
in a slow, measured, melodious voice.
5. Soon We will place on you a heavy
message.
6. Truly the rising by night is most
conducive and most suitable for the
Word.
20. Your Lord knows that you rise nearly
two-thirds of the night, or half the night,
or a third of the night, and so does a group
of those with you. But G-d appoints night
and day in due measure, He knows that
you are unable to keep count of it. So He
has turned to you. Therefore read of the
Quran as much as may be easy for you.
He knows that there may be some among
you in ill health, others traveling through
the land, seeking G-d’s bounty, and others
fighting in G-d’s cause. Therefore read as
much of the Quran as is easy…
